It started at wing night in The Shed. 

Tracy was living in Wuxi teaching English.

Derek was living in Shanghai writing college application essays for wealthy high school students.

Tracy met Lauren while studying at NYU and became good friends during their time abroad at NYU Shanghai.

Derek met Lauren in the elevator of their apartment building in Shanghai and bonded over their mutual ability to speak English.

Tracy decided to take the train to Shanghai to visit Lauren.

Derek invited some friends to The Shed, a local Australian pub, for their weekly wing night.

Tracy was the first person to arrive after getting the details from Lauren.

Derek was the second person to arrive.

We didn’t talk much and sat awkwardly until more people showed up.

Tracy took the train back to Wuxi.

Derek asked Lauren when the next time her cute friend was coming back to town.

Tracy made it back to Shanghai for NYE 2017.

Derek wore an irresistible orange turtle neck.

We had our first kiss at midnight.

Tracy’s trips to Shanghai became more frequent.

Derek gradually learned more Chinese.

Lauren had people over for Easter brunch.

Tracy had a conversation with another friend in Chinese about whether Derek was her boyfriend or not.

Derek was eavesdropping and understood the conversation.

We have been together since.

 

We spent the next few months dating and traveling around China whenever possible. When Derek moved back to the US, we weren’t sure about the future of our relationship. However, it quickly became clear that we wanted each other in our lives. Eventually, Tracy moved back to Sacramento to teach elementary school through Teach for America. Derek had taken a job in St. Louis with Anheuser-Busch, and we dated long distance for several years, visiting each other as often as possible and spending Tracy’s summer vacations together.

 

When Covid hit, both of us began working remotely. We spent the first few months living together between St. Louis and Minneapolis before settling in Tracy’s hometown, Sacramento. After living there for a year with our dogs Hops and Cooper, we decided to try out Derek’s hometown, Minneapolis. Derek popped the question on an October weekend at the family cabin up north, and we have been happily engaged since.

Airport: Cancun International Airport (CUN)

We recommend booking Dreams Vista Cancun Resort’s shuttle service for transportation to and from the airport.

 

The bride and groom will be staying at the Dreams Vista Cancun Resort January 24-30, 2023.

What is the wedding dress code?

The wedding dress code is beach formal. Male guests should plan on wearing suit jackets and long pants for the wedding ceremony and reception. Female guests can wear cocktail attire or long dresses. Please note that the resort area can be extremely windy.

 

Do guestrooms provide irons or steamers?

There is a steamer in each guest room closet.

 

Will I be able to get cell service at the resort?

Yes! When we visited in April we were able to use our phones without connecting to the resort WIFI.

Why do we have to stay at Dreams Vista Resort & Spa?

To attend our ceremony and reception, 80% of our guests must be staying at the hotel. To avoid incurring additional fees and having to make difficult decisions about our guest list close to the wedding, we request our wedding guests stay at Dreams with us!

 

How long should I plan to stay?

Derek and Tracy will be staying January 24-30th. Dreams Vista Resort & Spa requires a 3 night minimum stay. We invite our guests to extend their stay and vacation with us!

 

Is transportation provided?

Dreams Vista Resort & Spa offers optional shuttle service to and from the airport. We highly recommend booking this shuttle to avoid stress and high taxi fees upon your arrival at Cancun International Airport.

 

What is the minimum number of nights I need to stay at Dreams Vista Resort & Spa in order to attend the wedding?

The resort requires wedding guests to stay a minimum of 3 nights.

 

What type of room should I book?

After our site visit in April 2022, we recommend booking a “Preferred” room so that you will have access to the adults-only roof-top pool.

 

How early should I book my room?

We recommend booking as soon as you can to ensure you lock in a room rate.

 

What is the dress code at the resort?

During the day, guests can wear beach cover-ups when accessing indoor spaces. The 4 restaurants on site require pants for men during dinner service. 

 

What type of weather can I expect in January?

In January, Cancun’s weather forecast is a high of 82℉ and a low of 67℉. The resort can get very windy, so we suggest dressing in layers for optimal comfort. 

 

How much is it to golf?

You can golf 18 holes for $115, or 9 holes for $115. You can either bring your own clubs or rent some at the course for ~$50. While we were there this spring, there were a large number of tee times available day-of.

 

Where will the ceremony and reception be held?

Both our ceremony and reception will be held outdoors. The ceremony will be held on the Ocean Palapa, a platform overlooking the ocean. The reception will be held at the Grand Vista Terrace, an outdoor space adjacent to the first floor of the resort.
